22/03/11 - World chess players gather in Tashkent

The fifth international chess tournament Tashkent Open in honor of the first Uzbek grant master Geogriy Agzamov opened in the capital of Uzbekistan on 18 March. Geogriy Agzamov, born in 1954 in Almalyk, Tashkent region, was two times champion of Uzbekistan and the first Central Asian chess player to win the grand master title at the age of 30. The Tashkent Open tournament, held since 2007, has gathered over 100 players from Uzbekistan, Russia, Ukraine, Israel, Georgia, Armenia, Indonesia and Afghanistan. Uzbekistan is represented by experienced players Alexey Barsov, Anton Filippov, Tahir Vahidov, Jurabek Hamrakulov, Dmitriy Kayumov, Andrey Kvon, Vladimir Yegin, Olga Sabirova, Nafisa Muminova, Nadira Nadirjanova, Yulduz Hamroqulova and others.
