WORLD BANK VICE PRESIDENT VISITS UZBEKISTAN

According to the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Washington, D.C., the World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Cyril Muller visits Uzbekistan on February 26-28.The purpose of the visit is to discuss the progress of projects implementation with participation of the World Bank, as well as promising areas in which this international financial institution could work closely with the Government of Uzbekistan.The program of the visit includes negotiations with members of the Government and the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan. Cyril Muller will also address students and faculty members at Westminster International University in Tashkent, as well as hold a briefing on the results of his visit for the mass media.The current portfolio of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the World Bank includes 39 implemented and ongoing projects with attraction of concessional financing in the amount of 4.4 billion USD. Within the framework of the Partnership Strategy for the period up to 2020, more than 20 promising new initiatives are being considered. The Bank actively provides consulting assistance to Uzbekistan, in particular, its experts took part in development of the Concept for reforming the tax system.

According to the Embassy, in order to support further expansion of Uzbekistan’s trading and export potential, the World Bank plans to expand cooperation on strengthening the dialogue in “Uzbekistan – World Bank – International Labour Organization” format, promotion of employment and creation of favorable working conditions, as well as on implementation of projects related to gender equality, infrastructural development, increasing energy efficiency, agricultural modernization and ensuring food security.
