30/03/11 - OSCE delegation visits Uzbekistan

The delegation headed by the High Commissioner of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) for Ethnic Minorities Ambassador Knut Vollebek is on a visit in Uzbekistan. On 28 March, the delegation met the Ombudsman of Uzbekistan Sayyora Rashidova.

During the meeting, it was noted that relations between Uzbekistan and the OSCE were consistently developing in all directions, particularly in the field of parliamentary relations, law and order, and human rights protection.

The sides stressed that in Uzbekistan special attention was paid to ensuring inter-ethnic harmony, and representatives of all nationalities and peoples live in peace irrespective of their language, religion, social origin.

Uzbekistan has been cooperating with the OSCE in spheres like strengthening regional security and stability, development of civil society, expansion of international economic and humanitarian partnership, and environment.

The talks touched upon issues of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the OSCE in the field of legislation and judicial system, and the current state and prospects of bilateral relations.

“OSCE jointly with Uzbekistan has for several years been implementing a number of projects,” said Knut Vollebek. “We had the opportunity to get acquainted with the work of the Ombudsman of Uzbekistan in the sphere of protection of human rights and interests. Our goal is to share experiences in ensuring the rights of national minorities, ​​and educational and outreach activities in this area. I am sure that our cooperation will further expand and strengthen.”

The OSCE delegation will also hold talks in the ministries of foreign affairs, public education, higher and secondary specialized education of Uzbekistan, as well as the Republican International Cultural Center.
