Tashkent hosted an event dedicated to the United Nations Day. It was attended by members of the Senate and the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, representatives of ministries and departments, NGOs and international organizations.

Uzbekistan has established a mutually beneficial and equal partnership with many countries in the world, as well as international organizations, and the role of the country in the world community is increasing. The relations of Uzbekistan with the United Nations have been developing effectively, UzA notes.

President Islam Karimov in his address at the September 2010 plenary session of the UN General Assembly on the Millennium Development Goals made practical suggestions and recommendations on the topical issues of global concern. In particular, the global community with great interest listened to the information on the work carried out to meet the Millennium Development Goals in Uzbekistan, the country’s cooperation with the UN, processes taking place in Central Asia, proposals to address issues of regional security and environment, and practical suggestions to solve Afghanistan’s problems peacefully.

Uzbekistan actively cooperates with a number of UN agencies, including the UN Development Programme, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UNAIDS, the UNESCO and others.

In cooperation with UNESCO, Uzbekistan held the celebrations of the anniversaries of our ancestors and the country’s great cities with historical and architectural heritage. The UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List includes historical cities of Samarkand and Karshi, the historic center of Bukhara, and the Ichan Kala complex in Khiva. The national folklore traditions of Boysun were recognized by UNESCO as masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of the human civilization. The international music festival “Sharq Taronalari” (Oriental Melodies) is also held in partnership with UNESCO.

“Uzbekistan has actively supported the UN Millennium Declaration of 2000, and over the past period has achieved stable progress in this direction,” Anita Nirody, Resident Representative of the UNDP in the country, said. “Programs in the social sphere, particularly in education and health, implemented in Uzbekistan are an important factor in the notable progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Uzbekistan adopted the state plan of actions for 2011-2015 to accelerate the implementation of the MDGs. The UN agencies operating in the country will continue to support Uzbekistan in achieving these goals.”

An exhibition on the work of the United Nations was organized in the framework of the celebrations.

Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Elyor Ganiev participated in the event.
