01/09/11 - Foreign leaders congratulate President with Independence Day

Heads of foreign states, governments, international organizations, politicians and public figures have sent letters to President Islam Karimov, congratulating the head of the state and the people of Uzbekistan on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of independence of the country.

In his message to the President, Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon said that over the past 20 years, Uzbekistan has firmly established itself as an independent state, UzA informs.

“You have made significant progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), such as education and healthcare, addressing impacts of climate change and environmental degradation, which had made a significant impact on your country,” the head of the UN wrote.

Uzbekistan plays a crucial role in regional relations, he continued, once again expressing gratitude for the support provided by Uzbekistan during the tragic events in southern Kyrgyzstan last year.

“Equally important are your efforts in economic recovery and establishment of peace and security in Afghanistan, as well as leadership in regional initiatives. Your continued participation in this activity is indispensable for stability both in Afghanistan and Central Asia in general,” Ban Ki-Moon stressed.

“Uzbekistan is an important member of the UN. Your contribution in such areas as promotion of nuclear non-proliferation, sustainable development and solving problems caused by climate change is highly appreciated. I look forward to our continued cooperation in the future,” the UN Secretary-General said.
