01/12/10 - Uzbek team returns from Guangzhou

The members of the Uzbekistan national team have returned from the 16th Asian Games in China. They were greeted at a solemn ceremony held in the Tashkent airport with participation of the members of the government, sports officials, relatives, media and fans. The athletes of Uzbekistan won 56 medals in total at the Games held Guangzhou on 12-27 November. With 11 gold, 22 silver and 23 bronze medals, they became the eighth strongest team at the event. “Defending the honor of the Motherland at the international tournament is a special pride for any sportsman,” Rustam Kasimjanov, chess world champion and winner of the Asian Games, said. Chief trainer of the national boxing team Sharof Khudoyberdiyev, speaking at the ceremony, said the results of the performance in Guangzhou were significant, despite the fact that the team was made up of mainly young athletes. “I believe our athletes will achieve even higher results at the 30th Summer Olympic Games, to be held in 2012 in London,” he said.
