08/04/11 - EU-Central Asia ministers’ meeting held

The meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union and the Central Asian states (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan) was held in Tashkent on 7 April.

The European Union was represented by János Martonyi, Foreign Minister of Hungary, which is holding the EU chairmanship, Andris Piebalgs, EU Commissioner for Development, and Pierre Morel, EU Special Representative for Central Asia.

The participants of the meeting considered the current state and perspectives of development of relations between the EU and Central Asia in the framework of the EU’s New Partnership Strategy with the region.

The sides discussed issues of trade-economic cooperation and regional interaction in the fields of energy, environment, rational use of water resources, border protection and fighting drug smuggling, UzA informs.

The ministers also exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and other important topics of regional security.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan and the EU delegation signed the Protocol on introducing changes in the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the European Communities.

On the same day, foreign ministers of Uzbekistan and Hungary held political consultations.
