International cooperation

Mosud Mannan: We have complete mutual understanding and expertise of fruitful cooperation

In Bangladesh, a universal yarn made from Uzbek cotton is used for the production of ready-made garments. These goods are distributed all over the world, and interestingly, it can be found in Uzbek stores. But why should it come here from third countries? This question during an interview with UT was raised by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bangladesh Mosud Mannan.

- Mr. Ambassador, you recently attended the Tashkent International Conference “Central Asia is the main priority of Uzbekistan’s foreign policy”. What do you think about Tashkent’s new regional vector?

- Uzbekistan has always demonstrated a clear commitment to cooperation between fraternal countries while preserving its sovereign interests. It should be noted that the republic has made a great contribution to strengthening political, cultural and economic relations with other countries. Stability in neighboring nations increases the level of security in Uzbekistan. The international community highly appreciates Tashkent’s foreign policy aimed at preserving and cementing peace throughout Central Asia.

In general, it can be stressed that Uzbekistan forms its relations with neighboring countries on the basis of a multilateral system of partnership, and the government makes every effort to maintain the geopolitical balance in the region. Such a strategy and a favorable social environment allow for creating new prospects and opportunities for enhancing the cooperation between states and peoples. In practice, we have seen a number of projects that have already been successfully implemented. One of them dealt with improving the transport system between Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Oman. Another brilliant case in mind is the construction of road bridges across the Amudarya River. Such schemes have the potential to expand business opportunities and can be seen as an example of consolidating partnership among bordering nations.

In addition, similar joint projects stimulate closeness between fraternal countries. And, to be sure, such a positive trend will benefit both Uzbekistan and the entire world community as a whole.

- It is the fourth year you are in charge of the diplomatic mission in Uzbekistan. Probably, you’ve had opportunity to visit many regions of our country and explore the potential for cooperation there. Please share your experience.

- During my four years as head of the diplomatic mission in Uzbekistan, I have visited almost all the cities of the republic and enjoyed their beauty. It was an excellent chance not only to get acquainted with the rich historical past, but also to study the current state of the regions, outline new directions for wider cooperation. And I must stress that our countries have very extensive opportunities for developing ties and intensifying existing friendly bonds. This perspective concerns especially the bilateral trade and business relations. For example, in Bangladesh, a universal yarn made from Uzbek cotton is used for the production of ready-made garments. This product is distributed all over the world, and interestingly, it can be found in Uzbek stores, where it gets through third countries. Certainly, it would be more profitable if mass-produced clothing were acquired without intermediaries, directly in Bangladesh.

Uzbek textile manufacturers can learn from the rich experience of Bangladesh, drawing on our skilled workers and specialists. At the same time, Uzbekistan can use the vast emerging markets, which in recent years have been specially created for the growth of the middle class.

I should note that in my country there is a growing demand for manufactured goods, such as cars, as well as fresh and dried fruits, processed fruit juices.

- What can Uzbekistan be interested in?

- Uzbekistan may be interested in pharmaceutical products manufactured in Bangladesh, frozen seafood, jute products, furniture, which, by the way, meet world standards.

There are also many opportunities in the tourism sector. Everyone knows, and Bangladeshis are no exception, that Samarkand and Bukhara have a unique history and culture. Among our travelers there are many who wish to visit the land of the Temurids, because they have deep cultural roots connected with the Uzbek people.

In addition to the majestic minarets and turquoise domes of Uzbek mosques, what also fascinates the eye is the diverse landscape of your country: lakes, rivers, deserts, deep picturesque canyons and breathtaking mountains. Such environmental data themselves determine the development of eco- and sports tourism, which will attract visitors not only from Bangladesh, but also from around the world.

And, of course, we must not forget about the cultural and educational spheres. Therefore, the Embassy, setting its own goals, pays special attention to the exchange among scientists, artists, teachers, journalists and athletes of the two countries.

- A visit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to Tashkent was planned for this month, but it has not taken place...

- Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, MP, has had to postpone his visit for an indefinite period.

You know that there was a flood in Bangladesh, which is considered the most destructive in the last 50 years. Many infrastructure facilities have been destroyed, farms, crops and animals have been washed away. We hope that the water will recede and people will return to their old life, start rebuilding their homes and farms.

The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made every effort to provide assistance to people affected by the disaster. The state quickly developed extensive rehabilitation programs to make the economy work after flood water recedes. The entire Cabinet, together with Foreign Minister Shahriar Alam, is involved in supporting the affected people.

I cannot help saying a few words about the visit itself. It was organized to bolster the already existing and successfully operating bilateral relations between our countries. But we are not going to stop there and plan to enhance trade relations, focusing on the cotton industry and the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, we have big plans to improve interaction in education, which involves an expanded exchange of students and academic staff to participate in a variety of educational programs. We do not lose hope that, after the situation is stabilized, the Foreign Minister will visit Tashkent and hold scheduled meetings.

- We are just a few days away from the significant event – the 26th anniversary of our country’s independence. What will you wish the Uzbek people on this date?

- On the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan on behalf of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, I am happy to congratulate the Uzbek people on this remarkable event. Important reforms implemented in this country under the First President Islam Karimov and under the auspices of the current President, His Excellency Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the great achievements of the people themselves in building a new democratic state and civil society are truly fantastic. We hope that your country will continue to prosper and achieve success in all areas.

If we follow the dynamics of our relations, from the moment of establishment of diplomatic ties between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, we can observe significant progress. Today we have complete mutual understanding and experience of fruitful cooperation. It is sincerely believed that these fraternal relations will continue to grow. I wish the people of Uzbekistan eternal peace, happiness and every success in all endeavors for the prosperity of this great nation!
