‘Desert Ships’ to Bolster the Economy

A number of projects to develop camel breeding is due for realization in the Navoi region in the near future.

To do this, 1,500 camels have been purchased in the Kyzylorda region of Kazakhstan and brought to the Ok Takir settlement in Navoi’s Tamdi district. They include camels of dairy breeds.

“An area of more than 61 thousand hectares is designated for camel breeding,” says the chairman of the association Navoi-Korakul U. Khalilov. “Next year, it is planned to open a shop for processing camel milk. This will not only create new jobs, but also serve to improve the well-being of the locals. Camel wool has a number of advantages. Measures are being worked out for its effective use.

In the Kanimekh district of the region, a large area has been assigned for the development of this segment, and now there are more than 3 thousand camels here. According to reports, last year the district was visited by 3 thousand tourists who wished to have a ride on camels and taste the camel milk saturated with useful elements that bolster the immune system.

Taking into account the efficiency of the industry, it is planned to organize a modern cattle-breeding complex around Aidarkul, designed for 1,000 camels. In this complex, with a total cost of 15.7 billion soums (currency rates of CB RU from 03.05.2018, 1$= 8068.20 soums), a total of a thousand tons of camel milk is anticipated to be processed annually. In the future, this place will turn into a modern ecotourism center to receive 10 thousand tourists a year.

“Today, three ecotourism centers located in Yangikazgan village do not meet the necessary requirements,” said the deputy hokim of the Kanimekh district U. Elmurodov. “Now, 3.1 thousand hectares are allocated for these centers on the Aidarkul shores, a 4 billion soums project is being implemented. 21 yurts, 10 modern wooden cottages for tourists and a restaurant will be built here. Construction work is scheduled to be completed by the Independence Day of Uzbekistan. From the second quarter of 2019, we will also adjust to camel milk processing.”

In short, camel breeding in the Kyzylkum oasis will serve not only to improve the welfare of the locals, but also boost ecotourism in the region.
