Uzbekistan Introduces a New Vaccine

“Uzbekistan has taken one step forward to rid the world of a terrible disease, poliomyelitis, and can provide with the best available protection,” Health Minister Alisher Shadmanov has said.

The introduction of inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine (IPV), which became possible with the support of WHO and UNICEF, is a progress made by Uzbekistan in the fight against poliomyelitis.

According to the head of UNICEF Uzbekistan Country Office Sascha Graumann, despite the fact that in 2002 Uzbekistan was declared a polio-free zone, the introduction of a new vaccine is an important step towards stopping outbreaks.

“The addition of at least one dose of IPV in the immunization schedule is the best way to protect small Uzbeksatis from lifelong paralysis,” added the WHO chief in Uzbekistan Lianne Kuppens.

So far, eradication of poliomyelitis has been carried out with oral polio vaccine (OPV). To find out the difference between OPV and IPV, we turned to Dr. Dilorom A. Tursunova, National Coordinator of the Expanded Program on Immunization in Uzbekistan.

- How do these two vaccines differ?

- Both vaccines protect against lifelong paralysis caused by poliovirus. OPV has a unique ability to form the immunity of the intestinal mucosa, necessary to stop transmission of the virus.

The use of IPV in combination with OPV promotes a better formation of humoral immunity.

- Is this vaccine safe?

- IPV vaccine is re-qualified by WHO and certified by the Ministry of Health. This ensures the safety of the vaccine, which protects children from all three strains of poliovirus. In addition, the vaccine can be used to immunize preterm infants.

- Are there any side effects?

- There are no serious side effects registered worldwide. There may be a slight local reaction.

 - Do you need to implant both vaccines at the same time or at different times?

- OPV and IPV can be done at the same time. It is considered the most accurate method: the introduction of both vaccines in one visit provides maximum protection against poliomyelitis and excludes missed opportunities for full immunization of children.

- Can one combine the vaccine with other vaccinations?

- IPV is effective both when applied alone and together with other vaccines. In addition, for a child a one-time visit is better than two or more.

Ever since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was set up in 1988, the incidence rate worldwide has fallen by more than 99%, and the number of countries with endemic poliovirus transmission has declined from 125 to 3. They are Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan.
