The fifth sports games of university students of Uzbekistan Universiad-2010 opened in Andijan on Friday.
Holding the Universiad in 2010, which was announced by the President as the Year of harmoniously developed generation, has a symbolic meaning. Sport plays a great role in upbringing healthy generation.
Prior to the games, huge construction and preparation work has been carried out in Andijan.

Representatives of state and public organizations, world sports champions, students and their parents participated in the opening ceremony at the Soglom Avlod (Healthy Generation) stadium.
Hokim (governor) of Andijan region A.Usmanov announced the Universiad-2010 open.
State advisor to the President H.Sultanov read the congratulatory message of the head of the state to the games participants.

The state anthem of Uzbekistan is played and the country’s state flag is raised at the stadium, followed by the flag of Universiad.
The torch of the games is then lit. It was brought to Andijan from Parkent district of Tashkent region by young sportsmen.
This year, the Universiad will include competitions in 12 kinds of sports, including basketball, volleyball, kurash, belbogli kurash, judo, track-and-field athletics, tennis, table tennis, football, handball, chess and swimming.

The first Universiad was held in 2000 in Namangan. In 2002, the games were held in Bukhara and in 2004, in Samarkand. In 2007, the Universiad was hosted by the capital city, Tashkent.
